East Africa Drought Disaster Events

Burundi (BUR)

  • Period: 2021-2022 Drought
  • Impact: 1.4 million people (12% of population) became food insecure
  • Areas: Eastern provinces severely affected, particularly Kirundo, Muyinga, and Cankuzo
  • Agricultural Impact: 63% decline in bean production, with maize and sorghum also affected
  • Response: WFP provided food assistance to 40,000 vulnerable people in April 2022
